clinical volunteer experience

AdventHealth Ocala, 2010-2011

My favorite part of shadowing was observing the interaction between the medical professionals and patients. I learned the value of patience and being observant when working in a clinical setting.  My shadowing experience has helped me to gain insight into what it’s like to work in a hospital. The knowledge I gained here will assist me in any job I work at in the future. My time volunteering at AdventHealth inspired me to switch my major to Dietetics and Nutrition.

Received "Auxiliary Award," 2011

Total hours acquired: 178

Nicklaus Children's Hospital, 2012-2013

I observed the daily routines of registered dietitians and nurses working in cardiology, oncology, and ICU departments. When inside patients' rooms, I learned how dietitians assess patients' dietary status by observing meal trays and how they word questions to elicit important information from patients. I assisted nurses by checking height and weight measurements, transporting patients, and checking in patients into the ER.  As a Beside Buddy, I learned ways of providing therapeutic coping skills to kids through playtime and listening. My time shadowing in pediatrics inspired me to accept a job within the Women Infants and Children (WIC) Program.
